Managing Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Feline Patients
Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis: An Overview of Practical Diagnosis and Management for the General Practitioner (AZVMA Accreditation: Pending)
Instructor: Dr. Young
Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a challenging and often frustrating condition encountered in general practice, characterized by severe oral inflammation, pain, and variable response to therapy. This 50-minute lecture is designed to provide general practitioners with a clear, practical framework for the diagnosis and management of FCGS.
The presentation will review current understanding of the pathophysiology of FCGS, including the role of immune dysregulation and plaque-associated inflammation. Attendees will learn how to recognize clinical signs, perform appropriate diagnostic workups, and differentiate FCGS from other oral diseases. Emphasis will be placed on setting appropriate client expectations early in the disease course. Evidence-based treatment strategies will be discussed, including medical management options (analgesia, anti-inflammatory therapy, immunomodulation) and the role and timing of surgical intervention, particularly full-mouth or near full-mouth extractions. By the end of the session, participants will be able to develop a treatment plan, communicate effectively with pet owners, and recognize when referral to a veterinary dental specialist is indicated. This lecture aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce practitioner frustration through a structured, clinically relevant approach to FCGS.Â
